What the licence is

A perpetual, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to run one installation of Bosun for one business, with the source code included.

Perpetual means it does not expire and there is nothing to renew. There is no licence key, no activation and no check phoning home, which also means there is nothing that can stop working if we are no longer here.

What you may do

More than most software licences allow, because you have the code and you paid once for it.

  • Run it for your business, for as many of your own staff as you like, forever
  • Rebrand it completely - name, mark, colour, domain - which is how it is designed to be used
  • Read, modify and extend the source code, yourself or through any developer you choose
  • Move it between servers, hosts or countries as often as you want
  • Keep running your version indefinitely, whether or not you renew support
  • Take your data out at any time - it is a single database file you already have

What needs an agreement first

One thing, and it is the one people ask about: installing it for other businesses. That is a different commercial arrangement from buying it for yourself, and we would much rather agree it openly than have you discover a restriction after you have sold it to a client.

  • Installing it for clients, or reselling it - talk to us first, see partners
  • A second installation for a genuinely separate business you own - usually straightforward, still needs saying
  • Distributing the source code publicly, or publishing it as open source
  • None of these is a "no" by default. They are conversations, and they get put in writing

What the licence does not include

So there is no misunderstanding later.

  • Ownership of the intellectual property - you hold a perpetual licence, we retain the copyright
  • The right to use our name or marks in your own marketing, other than saying who built it if you want to
  • Future major versions as a right, though in practice your support period includes the updates released in it
  • Third-party accounts - your AI provider, WhatsApp and hosting are your own contracts

If we stop trading

Your licence is perpetual and your installation is on your server, so it carries on running. There is no activation server to go dark and no subscription to lapse.

You already hold everything needed to maintain it: the unobfuscated source, its automated test suites and its documentation. It is built on ordinary, widely known technology - Node.js and SQLite - specifically so that any competent developer can pick it up without us.
